Suburb In The Spotlight: Double Bay

One Buyers Agency helped to secure this beautiful modern townhouse for first time buyers in Double Bay.

Lifestyle

It’s no secret that Double Bay is one of Sydney’s chicest suburbs. Admittedly, we may be a little biassed, given that it’s One Buyers Agency’s home base! For decades, the suburb has been the centre of cosmopolitan food and fashion in Sydney and it’s currently undergoing a wave of exciting revitalisation, making it a prime investment and property market hotspot in the eastern suburbs.

With bays and beaches on one side and lush Cooper Park on the other, Double Bay’s network of walkable streets and shopping arcades make it the perfect place for wandering, window shopping and people-watching.

It’s also a hotspot for water and beach lovers. Set sail from the yacht club, take a dip at Redleaf Pool or jump on the ferry for a scenic ride to the city. And it’s not just the harbourside part of “the Bay'' that's thriving – the joint Woolworths/Woollahra Council redevelopment across New South Head Road at Kiaora Place has created a distinctly Parisian vibe with its outdoor cafes, bustling bistros and poodle-friendly pedestrian thoroughfare.

Wining and Dining

From baguettes to bagels and schnitzel to sushi, you’ll find every imaginable type of cuisine in cosy cafes, trendy trattorias and high-end restaurants. Brunch or lunch in style at one of the multitudes of cafes and restaurants like Indigo and Little Jean, or relax over a high tea at The InterContinental Hotel.

Grab a drink or dinner at heritage corner pub The Royal Oak Hotel, a beer or cocktail at The Golden Sheaf, Bibo or Mrs Sippy. Top restaurants Margaret and Matteo offer creative, upscale cuisine for a fabulous night out.

Streets of Double Bay

Because Double Bay has such level streets, it’s super-easy to navigate on foot. And with a major supermarket and loads of other convenience stores close by, there’s no need to wander further afield for the essentials.

At its centre are shopping and dining streets like Transvaal Avenue, Knox, Cross and Bay Streets which fan out to a network of leafier streets and foreshore spaces. The latter are lined with both art deco and modern apartments and townhouses through to terraces and grand historic mansions.

People Profile

Although it’s still a popular choice for downsizers and retirees, Double Bay’s population is a lot more diverse these days. The trendy eateries and bars around Kiaora Place and the Bay Street precinct are attracting a crowd of younger professionals who see the suburb not just as a playground – they’re opting to buy real estate locally as well.

The revamped library, plentiful parkland with off-leash space for dogs and the weekly markets on Guilfoyle Avenue also make the suburb appealing to families. Those with school-age kids have the choice of Double Bay Public School on William Street, Rose Bay Secondary College and lots of top-notch independent schools like Ascham, Kincoppal, Cranbrook and the Scots College in neighbouring suburbs.
